Uluwatu sits ninety metres above the Indian Ocean with nothing between the cliff and the swell. Here 316 stainless is not an upgrade, it is the entry requirement — while the water figures stay the same as any other coastal town: 516 watts, 1.5 PK, 7.4 hours.

In Canggu the salt-laden wind is seasonal. At Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang Padang the south-westerly hits the cliff all year and carries salt to terraces 200 metres back from the edge. In those conditions 304 stainless begins to pit within fourteen months — we have replaced two tubs built by other people for exactly that reason. So every bolt, step, pipe clamp and support frame we install here is 316, with no cheaper option offered.
The part that usually dies first is not the tub but the condenser. Thin aluminium fins in an outdoor unit are a perfect salt trap. For Uluwatu the fins are coated in Cikarang before the unit ships, and we ask for a freshwater rinse every fortnight rather than every month. Five minutes; without it, cooling capacity falls 15 to 20 per cent over two years and your tub stops reaching 5 degrees. That loss is not a warranty claim, it is a maintenance failure, and we say so at handover.
The Bukit is solid karst, which is excellent news for foundations and bad news for anything sunken. A 780-kilogram tub standing on rock will never settle, so the pad question that dominates other towns barely exists here. But cutting a 60-centimetre recess into Pecatu limestone is not a job for a shovel: it needs a concrete breaker and adds three to five working days compared with digging soil in Sanur or Denpasar.
For that reason we more often propose a tub standing on a deck than a sunken one, or an outdoor cold plunge on a frame clad in timber so it reads as built-in without any rock being cut. If you do want it sunken, the breaking work is quoted separately and fixed before the deposit rather than appearing halfway through.
Many villas in Pecatu and Ungasan have no mains connection and run on boreholes or delivered tankers. Water that has passed through limestone is high in calcium, and calcium leaves white scale on the titanium heat exchanger. Scale is one of three things our warranty excludes, so we do not pretend it is a minor detail: for any Bukit address we ask for a hardness test before quoting and almost always fit a filter on the fill line.
One 5,000-litre delivery fills a 400-litre tub twelve times over, and a filtered tub only needs a full change every four to eight weeks. Water cost is not the problem at Uluwatu — water quality is. Ask your supplier to name the source and keep the paperwork for our service visit.
The usage pattern here is the clearest on the island: four to six hours in the water at Bingin or Padang Padang, then three to five minutes in the tub. Many clients use it for recovery after big days, and that is between them and their own bodies — we are builders, not clinicians, and anyone with a heart condition, uncontrolled hypertension or a pregnancy should ask a doctor rather than a workshop. What we handle is the water still reading 5 degrees after four people have used it inside an hour, which is why 500 litres on a 2 PK chiller is the combination we install most often in surf houses: 595 watts, 6.6 hours to pull down, Rp 250,000 a month.
The road from the Tabanan workshop takes an hour and a half to two hours, the longest of any south Bali town, so deliveries leave at five to miss the Bypass. Jimbaran is thirty minutes north with identical technical figures, and Nusa Dua on the other side of the peninsula has far larger electrical connections because of its hotels. The difference is around Rp 3.5 million per tub. In year-round salt wind, 304 pits within fourteen months while 316 lasts years. We do not fit 304 at any address within two kilometres of the coast, including when a client asks for it.
Every fortnight with fresh water, top to bottom along the fins, chiller switched off. Once a month is enough in other coastal towns. Fins left to crust up lose 15 to 20 per cent of capacity in two years and that is not covered by the warranty.
It helps the condenser, which sheds its hot air faster. It hurts the water surface: an open tub on a cliff loses heat quicker but fills with dust and leaves. The insulated lid here is a wind cover as much as a power saver, and we fit latching catches so it does not take off.
500 litres with a 2 PK chiller. Beyond that, consider a two-person ice bath so people stop queuing rather than buying more litres of water to chill.
One and a half to two hours from the Tabanan workshop, leaving at five in the morning to avoid the Ngurah Rai bypass. Total time from deposit to cold test is fourteen working days.
