Teak ice bath built so the timber can move without the tub leaking

Teak breathes all year: about 2.4 millimetres of seasonal movement across a 120-millimetre stave. That is why the water in our tubs sits in an acrylic liner and the teak works as a skin, free to expand and shrink as it likes.

Why the teak is not what holds the water

A classic timber tub holds water between its staves: the wood swells, the staves press against each other, the joints close themselves. That works beautifully for a 38-degree hot tub used all year. In an ice bath it fails, because the inner face of each stave sits at 4 degrees while the outer face sits at 33. Twenty-nine degrees across a single 40-millimetre stave means the inside is shrinking while the outside is expanding, and the timber cups towards the cold. We have been called to three timber tubs built by other people that began leaking in month five, all for exactly this reason.

So we invert the order. An 8-millimetre acrylic liner, vacuum-formed over a CNC-cut mould, holds the water. Forty millimetres of polyurethane wraps the liner. The teak stands outside all of it as a skin, splashed rather than soaked, drying within hours, and the stainless banding absorbs whatever movement is left. If the liner is ever damaged it lifts out in a day and a replacement for a 400-litre tub costs about Rp 6.5 million; on a traditional timber tub, a leak means the whole tub.

Reclaimed timber, not plantation teak

The staves come from demolished houses and warehouses in East Java, dressed to 40 by 120 millimetres. That is not sentimentality about old wood. Teak that has already stood for fifty years has finished moving. We take the moisture content down to 12 per cent in a kiln before ripping, and any stave that bows more than 1.5 millimetres per metre is rejected, which is usually one board in five. Fifteen-year-old plantation teak carries far more sapwood and moves about twice as much for the same swing in humidity.

Silver or honey: a decision, not a maintenance failure

Teak contains its own oils and does not need finishing to survive. Ultraviolet light breaks down the lignin at the surface, and within eight to fourteen months an unoiled tub turns the silver-grey that people either love or cannot live with. Structurally nothing has happened; the staves are as strong as the day they went on and the liner inside does not care at all. If you want the honey colour to stay, that is tung oil twice a year, about 250 millilitres per coat and two hours of work. Guests at a rental villa, in our experience, photograph the silver one more often.

Banding: three tensionings in the life of the tub

Two 316 stainless bands hold the staves with M12 tensioners at the back. They need tightening three times: at month three, once the timber has settled into the humidity of your particular site; at the end of the first dry season; and once a year after that. Torque is 18 newton-metres, the spanner stays with the tub, and the job takes five minutes. On a rental property we would rather do it ourselves — it is part of the schedule under maintenance and service.

The lid, and the 194 watts it is worth

A one-piece lid for a 152-centimetre barrel weighs 19 kilograms and stops being used somewhere in week three. Ours is split into two hinged halves of nine kilograms each, 60-millimetre closed-cell foam under UV-stable vinyl, with teak rope handles on both sides. That matters in money: the difference between a lid that gets used and one that does not is 194 watts of heat load and roughly Rp 69,000 a month. The underside is domed 15 millimetres so condensation runs to the edge instead of dripping back into the water with whatever dust it has collected.

When teak is the wrong choice

Do not put a teak tub on an unshaded rooftop. A dark timber surface in direct Jakarta sun reaches 58 degrees by two in the afternoon, and although the liner and insulation protect the water, the skin will check and split within two dry seasons — take an outdoor cold plunge in terrazzo or granite instead. Teak is also the wrong specification for a public gym: wet footprints and body oils go into the timber and have to be sanded out rather than wiped off. For that, see commercial ice baths.

Price, shipping and why teak travels well

Teak tubs from 250 to 700 litres run Rp 18-28 million for the complete body: liner, insulation, banding, split lid and circulation pump. The chiller is separate and starts at Rp 14 million for the smallest imported unit we re-test. Lead time is 14 working days for Java and 10 for Bali. If you are outside Java, teak is actually the easier shell to ship: staves and bands travel flat, the liner goes in its own crate, and our technician assembles the barrel on site in a day — the routes and timings are on inter-island delivery.

Does the wood grow mould if it is always wet?

The only permanently wet component is the acrylic liner. The teak skin is splashed and dries within hours. What does need watching is underneath the tub: standing directly on a floor, drips collect below and stay there. Every barrel goes on 35-millimetre stainless feet so air moves under it.

Can the liner be replaced later?

Yes, and that is a large part of the reason we build this way. The bands come off, the staves open like a barrel, the old liner lifts out and the new one drops in. One working day, and about Rp 6.5 million for a 400-litre liner.

Can I have a square teak tub?

You can, but we would talk you out of it. Stainless banding works by pressing the staves towards a centre, and on a square body that force concentrates in four corners. For a square tub with a timber look we cast a terrazzo body and clad the outside in teak — the result reads the same and the price lands between the two.

Is this real teak?

Tectona grandis, reclaimed from buildings. What is sold locally as jati belanda is pine from shipping crates and has none of the natural oil this construction depends on. We use none of it anywhere in the tub.

How long does the teak skin last?

Ten to fifteen years under a roof, eight to twelve fully exposed with regular oiling. The liner and insulation outlast the skin, so the first thing ever replaced is the outer staves, and that can be done a few at a time rather than all at once.
