The hottest air in south Bali, and what it costs in hours

Denpasar sits four metres above the sea with afternoon air touching 33 degrees — one degree hotter than Canggu, Sanur or Nusa Dua. A degree is nothing on skin and quite a lot on a condenser. A 1.5 PK chiller rated at 4.2 kW delivers 1.99 kW once the water is at 5 degrees and the outdoor unit is standing in Denpasar air, against 2.02 kW in Canggu.

So a 400-litre tub here takes 7.6 hours to fall from 29 to 5 degrees, the slowest of the ten Bali towns we cover. For daily use that is irrelevant, because the tub is already cold by morning. It matters exactly once, on handover day: start the cold test at eight and the target arrives near dusk, which is why we book Denpasar handovers as a full day with somebody from our crew present the whole time.

Why we often talk clients down to 300 litres

Denpasar buyers calculate two things that rental owners never do: how long the household will really use this, and what it adds to a meter that already carries a pressure pump, a fridge and two air conditioners. So we propose 300 litres here more often than 400. A closed 300-litre tub in Denpasar absorbs 432 watts, reaches 5 degrees in 5.4 hours and costs Rp 176,000 a month — Rp 38,000 cheaper every month, on the same size of chiller, in a body that fits through a 80-centimetre side gate.

For the shell itself, a terrazzo ice bath is the usual choice because it shrugs off direct sun and can be matched to the polished floor of an older Bali house. If the budget is not there yet, an insulated portable ice bath is an honest way to prove you will actually use it daily before spending tens of millions. Placing a tub in a courtyard without offending the house

Most of our Denpasar work goes into houses built around a natah, the walled inner courtyard. The rules we follow come from clients rather than from us: the tub does not face the family shrine directly, it does not block the ceremonial route from the entrance to the bale, and the drain does not discharge towards the north-east corner. Technically this is a 90-degree rotation and a different drain point — trivial at the drawing stage, expensive after a concrete pad has been poured.

Where the courtyard is paving or bare earth we ask for a 100 mm reinforced pad. A 400-litre terrazzo tub full of water is about 780 kilograms, and on ordinary paving it will tilt by a few millimetres within a year until the overflow no longer runs level. Your own builder can pour it from our drawing for Rp 2-5 million; what our crew does and does not do is set out under installation.

The supply, which is where Denpasar jobs actually stall

Household connections here are typically 2,200 to 5,500 VA — smaller than the 3,500-7,700 VA we usually find in Canggu villas. A 1.5 PK chiller draws about 1,400 watts, which a 2,200 VA connection carries as long as it is not competing with a booster pump and an electric water heater. On 1,300 VA, upgrade first. A PLN upgrade costs a fraction of a compressor killed by voltage sag, and compressor damage below 180 volts without a stabiliser is one of the three things our warranty excludes.

Neighbours, and why their numbers differ

Sanur is twenty minutes east and often runs at 12 degrees rather than 5, which changes the chiller entirely. Tabanan, an hour west, is where your shell is cast: its water comes in at 26-28 degrees, so the same tub there absorbs 488 watts and costs Rp 201,000 a month.
