The physics do not change when guests arrive: 516 watts is 516 watts. Everything around the physics does. Eight strangers a day, a panel anyone can reach, a photographer booked for Tuesday, and an owner in another time zone.

Nobody puts a cold plunge in a rental villa for their own recovery. It goes in because it appears in the first four photographs, because it justifies a higher nightly rate, and because it is the detail a guest mentions in a review. That is a commercial decision, and it should drive the specification rather than be embarrassed about it.
What photographs well, in our experience of building for this market: a rim 12 centimetres wide so a person can sit on the edge, a matte ground finish rather than polished so the surface does not flare in midday sun, a dark body against pale decking, and a completely invisible machine. The condenser goes at least three metres away behind a slatted screen. A chiller in shot is worth roughly minus one star. Shell options are under products; the one we cast most often for this purpose is a terrazzo ice bath.
This is the single most common operational failure. The owner specifies 5 degrees; a guest back from the gym drops it to 3 and forgets. At 3 degrees a closed 400-litre tub in Canggu absorbs 543 watts rather than 516. The machine is still the right one — a 400-litre tub is 2 HP at either temperature, and there is no half-step above it — but the guest has just spent the margin the sizing rule reserved for hot afternoons and refills. The machine does not fail dramatically. It simply sits at 4.5 degrees on a hot afternoon, never quite matching the display, and the review says the plunge was not very cold.
| Target set by the guest | Holding load, 400 L | Chiller needed | Draw | Electricity / month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 °C | 418 W | 1 HP | 950 W | Rp 170,000 |
| 5 °C | 516 W | 2 HP | 1,850 W | Rp 214,000 |
| 4 °C | 529 W | 2 HP | 1,850 W | Rp 220,000 |
| 3 °C | 543 W | 2 HP | 1,850 W | Rp 226,000 |
Two fixes, and we fit either. Lock the panel to a 4-12 degree range so guests keep a real choice without spending the machine's whole margin, or leave the range open and accept that a hot afternoon at 3 degrees will read 4.5. What we will not recommend is buying the next size up to cover it: the step from 2 HP to 4 HP is Rp 43 million, which no villa recovers in review scores. Locking the panel matters for a second reason now, because the range runs to 40 degrees — a guest can heat the tub as easily as chill it, which is a feature on a heating and cooling chiller and a surprise on a listing that promised cold. The arithmetic behind all of it is in the chiller sizing guide.
A private tub takes one or two bathers a day. A rental takes six to eight, and each one brings in sunscreen, sand, salt and hair product. That is not a heat problem — it is a clarity problem, and clarity is what your next guest photographs. Without filtration the water is visibly cloudy in three days. With a 20-micron cartridge and ozone injection it holds three to four weeks at rental usage.
Do not drain between ordinary bookings. A filtered tub left running is cleaner on Friday than a tub drained on Tuesday and refilled in a hurry, and refilling costs you 7.4 hours of pull-down that a same-day check-in does not have. The one case for draining is a genuinely empty month, which is common in Sanur and Ubud between seasons.
We are builders, not clinicians, and we make no health claims about cold water. What we can do is remove the physical hazards that belong to the tub: a textured floor so it is not slippery, an internal bench so a bather is seated rather than crouching, steps of 20 centimetres rather than 30 for older guests, a grab rail on the dry side for the moment after getting out, and a lid that latches so it cannot be left half-open as a trip hazard over water.
Most of our rental clients are not in Indonesia for most of the year, and the equipment does not care. The routine is twenty minutes a month and it can be done by any competent member of a housekeeping team — which is precisely the problem, because housekeeping changes. So at handover we train one named person, photograph them doing each task, and leave a one-page laminated routine inside the pump cupboard rather than in an email that leaves with the last manager.
The first year includes two service visits from us. After that most rental owners take a monthly contract, which in Bali means a technician who is one to three hours away by road rather than a flight away. Coastal villas need the condenser fins rinsed monthly, or fortnightly at Uluwatu, and that single task is the difference between a chiller that holds its capacity and one that quietly loses 15 to 20 per cent over two years. The full schedule is under maintenance.
Against a nightly rate, those figures usually repay themselves inside a season, which is why villa owners rarely argue about them and almost always argue about the installation date instead. Full ranges are on the pricing page, the town-by-town schedule on the locations page, and your own volume can be sized in ten seconds on the chiller calculator.
One full working day if the pad already exists. We start at seven, the tub is seated and plumbed by midday, and the cold test finishes that evening. If a pad has to be poured, add two days of work and seven days of curing before installation.
They can leave the lid off, set 3 degrees, and put a glass on the rim. None of those damages the tub; all of them cost money or reputation. A locked panel range and a latching lid remove two of the three. The third is a sign.
Drain it, leave the lid on, and refill on the next arrival. Holding an empty tub cold for three months costs about Rp 640,000 and keeps it clean; leaving it full and switched off grows a film in a fortnight, which is the worst of both.
Not for a single villa. For a property with several units or a commercial operation, a separate meter is worth it purely for the argument it prevents later. A 2 HP chiller draws 1,850 watts and needs that headroom on the connection.
A 316 stainless or acrylic body on a frame, yes. Cast terrazzo or an in-ground concrete plunge stays with the building, and the shell warranty does not cover damage from lifting it. Decide this at the drawing stage.
Your manager, who calls us. Nine faults in ten are a cartridge, a flow switch, a capacitor or a tripped breaker, and we talk a local electrician through it on a video call the same day. Anything structural is ours to fix under the three-year shell warranty.

Bathers per day matters more than square metres. Tell us the realistic figure, not the optimistic one, and the filtration and chiller are sized around it.
We reply with sizing, the right chiller and a full price.
