European and American plunge tubs are generally well made. They are also sized against air we do not have, dew points we never see, and a service network that does not exist here. Every failure we are called to fix comes from one of those three assumptions.

A plunge tub designed in northern Europe is sized against ambient air around 18 degrees and mains water around 12. In Surabaya the afternoon air is 35 and the water arrives at 30. The gap the machine has to work across is roughly three times larger, and unlike a European summer it does not end in September — it runs 365 days a year with no night-time recovery, because the overnight low is 25.
Numbers make it concrete. The same closed 400-litre tub absorbs 432 watts in Bandung, 516 in Jakarta and 529 in Surabaya. A specification sheet written for 18-degree air might quote something closer to 200 watts. A chiller chosen against that figure is not slightly undersized; it is out by a factor of two and a half before anything else goes wrong.
This is the one that catches even careful buyers. In a temperate climate a cold water surface condenses very little, so the load is rounded away. Here the dew point sits near 25 degrees all year, so a 5-degree surface is twenty degrees below it and pulls moisture out of the air continuously. Every gram that condenses dumps its latent heat straight into the water. On an open 400-litre tub that is about 167 watts — 190 watts for every square metre of water — permanently, and it is on no imported sizing chart we have ever been shown.

Refrigeration ratings are quoted against a defined evaporating and condensing temperature, typically 15-degree water in mild air. Drop the water to 5 degrees and stand the condenser in 34-degree air and a 5.6 kW unit delivers about 2.6 kW. That is not a defect and it is not dishonest of the manufacturer — it is simply a different operating point, and one that sales literature rarely spells out. Our own figures are published with the derating already applied, which is why the 2 HP we quote behaves like 2 HP in your garden rather than in a test chamber.
Combine the three assumptions and the arithmetic is brutal. A tub sized for 200 watts with a machine assumed to deliver its full nameplate meets a real load of 516 watts against a real output of half the label. In practice that tub sits at 16 to 19 degrees in an open Jakarta garden, which is pleasant and is not a cold plunge. The whole calculation, constants included, is in the chiller sizing guide.
We are not going to pretend the answer is always no. If you live in a highland town — Berastagi at 1,300 metres with 17-19 degree tap water, Batu at 900 metres, Lembang at 1,312 — the load falls to 390 watts or below, the condensation term shrinks with the drier air, and a modest imported unit can genuinely hold temperature. If you want a specific designer object that nobody here makes, that is a legitimate reason to buy one, and we will happily fit an Indonesian-sized chiller to it.
What we would ask you to check before committing: the real output of the chiller at 5-degree water in 34-degree air rather than the nominal figure, the grade of every wetted metal part, the heat exchanger material, and who supplies a capacitor in your province. If the vendor cannot answer those four, the price on the invoice is not the price of the tub.
Roughly one enquiry a month is somebody who has already bought an imported tub that will not go below 15 degrees. The honest outcome is usually good news: the shell is sound and only the chiller is wrong. We measure the tub, calculate the real load, and either fit a correctly sized unit or add insulation and a proper lid, which alone takes a Jakarta tub from 710 watts down to 516. Sometimes we recommend a smaller volume rather than a bigger machine — a 250-litre tub that truly holds 3 degrees beats a 600-litre one stuck at 14.
We also say no. If the shell is uninsulated moulded acrylic with no cavity to fill, there is no honest way to make it hold 5 degrees in a Jakarta garden without a chiller so oversized that it short-cycles itself to death. Rarely. Most shells are structurally fine and the failure is the chiller, the insulation, or the absence of a lid. We measure before recommending anything, and we will tell you if the cheapest correct answer is a smaller tub rather than a bigger machine.
Yes, and we do it regularly. We calculate the load for your actual tub and city first. The chiller carries our two-year warranty; the shell stays the original manufacturer's problem, and we say which is which in writing.
Both are true at different operating points. The brochure figure is measured against 15-degree water in mild air; ours is the output against 5-degree water with the condenser in 34-degree air. Ask any vendor for the second figure and you will learn a great deal from the answer.
Some are beautifully made, particularly the acrylic and timber ones. What they are not is engineered for a 25-degree dew point, salt air and a country with no local spare parts. Build quality and climate suitability are different questions.
Closer, and a Singapore-market unit at least meets similar humidity. Check the stainless grade and the heat exchanger material anyway, and confirm who honours the warranty on this side of the strait. Buyers in Jakarta and Batam ask us this most often.
